Game: City League Semi Final
Opponents: Herbert Smith
Venue: Charlton Park Athletic Ground
Lloyd’s Rugby Club, fresh from their tour of North America and Canada, went into the City League Semi-Final blighted by injury but full of commitment to turning over what appeared to be a big and equally athletic Herbert Smith side.
From the kick-off, both sides exchanged early blows and with the back row combo of Wagstaff, Clarke and Moore, Lloyd’s dominated in the contact and breakdown. In a dogged first half it was Herbert Smith that broke the deadlock of a penno-apiece, with a soft try conceded by the insurance men.
The second half saw Lloyd’s rally and fight back with a strong commanding performance from McKie at fly-half – returning from a hamstring injury for his first outing at 10 for the LRFC. However, despite Lloyd’s dominance little more was converted into points than two penalties and a converted try giving us a 16 – 8 advantage.
From here Lloyd’s game took a turn for the worse in every department and Herbert Smith’s tails were up after stealing a quick rebound try through their “steppy” fly-half, which was duly converted.
The dying minutes were as tense as the club had experienced in the City League and with only single digits left on the clock Herbert Smith struck again to win the game 16 – 20.
Needless to say, all were very disappointed but on the back of a tough tour – and with the illustrious 7’s tournament the next day – the huge effort was greatly appreciated, with thanks extended to all those who turned out for the evening.
