Match Report by John Cardosi of the City League

Herbert Smith played well but unfortunately couldn’t match the awesome power, especially in the pack, of a confident Lloyd’s team. Lloyd’s scored a couple of well worked tries early on, and it looked like it may be a one sided affair. Herbies stuck with it and despite their defence holding up strongly, they couldn’t cover everywhere. After half time, Herbert Smith seemed galvanised and made serious ground, electing to run everything from everywhere. There were signs of promise but the luck was not on their side as repeatedly the last pass didn’t seem to stick. A sniping steal at the back of a Lloyd’s scrum from the Herbert Smith 9 and dash to the line was the only points taken from them on the day. The game ended with the most bizarre situation – Lloyd’s scored with no time left, and the 8 for Lloyd’s elected to take the kick. He made possibly one of the worst kicks seen this season as the ball never even reached the height of the crossbar however it hit one of the HS players charging it down and  it went up in the air and over the bar, conversion good!

So Lloyd’s return to the final after missing out last year to Herbert Smith at the same stage. Herbert Smith were the only team to finish the A League undefeated so a bit of a shock but Lloyd’s have improved as the year has gone on and now look to be on top form going into the final.
